What we do

The Electrical Safety Council is an independent charity committed to reducing deaths and injuries through electrical accidents at home and at work.

We are supported by all sectors of the electrical industry as well as local and central government, and we work to promote safety and good practice.

Through our activities and partnerships, we aim to ensure that consumers’ needs are recognised and that issues of safety are given appropriate priority in all matters electrical.

This includes:

As well as running general awareness campaigns and events to help educate consumers about the dangers of electricity, we also run campaigns and initiatives covering specific areas of risk such as product safety, fire safety and child safety.

The Electrical Safety Council also provides funding for grants to help vulnerable people who are unable to take action themselves to remedy electrical dangers in their homes.

Our team of electrical engineers represents consumer interests on standards-setting committees, including the committee responsible for the IEE Wiring Regulations, and other committees responsible for British, European and international standards.

The team writes popular technical publications and works constructively with the industry in ways such as chairing working groups that write best practice guides, and chairing the Electrical Installation Forum, the answers to questions considered by which are posted on the Charity’s website. The team also works closely with the technical committees of industry bodies, such as ECA and SELECT.
