Our Board

Board of Trustees

The Electrical Safety Council is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for setting the strategic goals of the charity to ensure that it fulfils its consumer safety mission, adheres to principles of good governance and remains true to its values. The Board comprises members who have a vast range of experience and interest in electrical safety to ensure the effective governance of the charity.

 
 

  • Charles Tanswell

    Charles Tanswell is a Chartered Electrical and Building Services Engineer with over 40 years experience related to electrical & mechanical installations. He is  the Chairman of the Council and has been a Trustee since 2001. Charles is also Chairman of the Council's Technical Committee. He represents the Society of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers serving Local Government (SCEME) on several national bodies including the UK Wiring Regulations Committee (JPEL/64) and the Electro-technical Assessment Specification.

  • Bryn Walker

    Bryn Walker is a building services consulting engineer with over 40 years experience in the construction industry and has been a Trustee of the Electrical Safety Council since 2001. He is currently the Deputy Chairman.  Bryn is also a Director of Fraser Walker Associates, Building Services Consulting Engineers, Oxford.

  • Bill Wright

    Bill Wright is an independent consultant on energy and sustainability matters. He is the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board and has been a Trustee for over 8 years. He is also on the Institution of Electrical Engineers committee which produces the IEE Wiring Regulations. He is also a Non-Executive Director of Summitskills, a Sector Skills Council promoting Building Services. Bill has an MA in Engineering from Trinity Hall, Cambridge and is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

  • David Dossett

    David Dossett is a chartered engineer with experience in the electricity supply industry, the oil industry and 20 years experience in international standardisation. He is the immediate past Chairman of the Board and has been a Trustee since 2001. David has served on several other boards including ASTA BEAB Certification Services Ltd and ORGALIME. He is also President of CENELEC, the European Electro-technical Standards Body. David has a BSc. In Electrical Engineering and is a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

  • Diane Johnson

    Diane Johnson is highly recognised as a leading voice of small and micro enterprises in the electrical contracting industry and a robust commentator on skills, apprenticeships and industry issues. Diane marked a historic milestone, in April 2010, when she was elected as the first female president of the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA). She is currently the ECA’s Skills Ambassador, Board Member of National Electrotechnical and Chairperson of the Education Training Committee for the ECA. Diane is the financial director of Eric Johnson of Northwich Ltd and a past director of SummitSkills. She became a Trustee in 2011.

  • Newell McGuiness

    Newell McGuiness is a qualified electrical engineer with over 30 years experience in the electrical installation industry. He has been Managing Director of SELECT, the Electrical Contractors’ Association of Scotland since 2004. His qualifications include a Post Graduate Diploma in Engineering Management and an Institute of Directors Diploma in Company Direction. He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a Member of the Chartered Management Institute. Newell has been a Trustee since 2004.

  • Rob Miguel

    Rob Miguel has been a trade unionist for over 30 years. He is a Safety Advisor with Unite and represents the union at the TUC, and on many UK government advisory committees such as ACTS (Toxic Substances), RIAC (Railways) and CONIAC (construction), also at international level with the European Commission Luxembourg. Rob is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health. He has been a Trustee since 2006.

  • Roy Jones

    Roy Jones has over 38 years of service within the utility market. He is currently Community Liaison Manager North West and North Wales with ScottishPower part of the Iberdrola Group. Roy holds post graduate qualification in Marketing and an MBA (OU) Business Administration. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management. Roy became a Trustee in 2009.

  • Steve Bratt

    Steve Bratt is the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Electrical Contractors’ Association. Steve’s career includes a number of senior positions in companies within the building services and wider construction industry. He also has experience of non-executive roles having operated as a non-executive director and chairman with companies involved with property construction. Steve holds an MBA, is a Chartered Director and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors. He became a Trustee in 2010.

  • Ted King

    Ted King has a long career in the civil service. He practiced first as a building services engineer working on civil and military building construction, and subsequently as officer responsible for the development of the energy efficiency, electrical and combustion safety parts of the Building Regulations for England and Wales.  He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. Ted became a Trustee in 2010.

  • Ron Gainsford

    Ron Gainsford has been Chief Executive of the Trading Standards Institute since February 2002. His professional background is in trading standards and local government with broad experience across a variety of local authorities and in UK, EU and international regulation of trading standards and associated consumer protection issues. He was made a Fellow of the Institute in 1999 for his services to trading standards and awarded the OBE in 2010 for services to consumers and to business. He was given freedom of the City of London in 2008 and is a member of the World Traders livery company.

  • Alison Parkes

    Alison Parkes is an award-winning public relations and communications strategist.  For more than 20 years she has planned and executed campaigns for commercial clients and trade organisations in the building and construction industry. She has also worked with public safety bodies to raise consumer awareness and drive behavioural change. Alison is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.  She became a trustee in 2012.
