Words to live by! The last thing you want to do is start any fires in the Student Union - or your new home - by overlooking electrical safety.

We know it can be a bit overwhelming the first time you rent somewhere or move into Halls. There's a lot to think about, but there are just a few things of the electrical nature that you don't want to overlook.

Here is a list of dos and don'ts when renting a property, and if you follow these simple points you shouldn't go too far wrong!

Report any electrical problems to your landlord immediately.
Use appliances according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Use an RCD with electrical equipment outdoors.
Regularly check the condition of plugs and cables.
Remove plugs from sockets carefully.

Don’t…

Carry out DIY repairs on electrical installations or appliances.
Bring electrical appliances into the bathroom.
Use electrical appliances with wet hands.
Overload adaptors.
