Testing sub-standard plugs

We have seen an increase in the number of people contacting us with concerns about the standard of the plugs on the electrical goods that they have bought on the internet.

We decided to investigate further and bought a selection of products online from UK business sellers. We then carried out some basic checks and were shocked at the standard of the plugs, many of which also contained sub-standard fuses.

Our video shows just how quickly one of these products can catch fire, as well as the uncontrolled explosion of a fake fuse when there is a fault.

As the tests have shown, all too often what looks like a bargain can turn out to be a cheap copy, of poor quality, or made to look like a well-known brand. Second hand goods may be damaged and therefore unsafe.

A common indicator of a sub-standard plug is an earth pin which is partially insulated. Also, look out for counterfeit approval marks, such as a back to front BSI kitemark!

Our Safe Shopper's Guide has been produced to help people identify and avoid possible risks when buying electrical goods online. It will help to keep you and your family safe and make you aware of your rights as a buyer.
